Satchel Stillwell is a licensed Professional Counselor Supervisor. He has served clients in the state of Texas for over a decade. With a focus on teenagers, adults, and families struggling with substance abuse disorders in the Dallas Fort Worth area, Satchel has dedicated 11 years to the field of recovery.
Satchel's unwavering passion lies in the restoration of families deeply affected by the devastating consequences of addiction. His extensive experience includes a role as Clinical Director at a renowned treatment center in Texas, where he specialized in developing and implementing their multi-family therapy program. During this time, Satchel directly supervised a team of clinicians and managed a caseload of individuals undergoing the 90-day treatment program.
Now, Satchel brings together his wealth of knowledge from working in an inpatient rehabilitation facility and in private practice to offer comprehensive counseling services for families commencing their recovery journeys.
Satchel works with children ages 6 and up and he has a passion for working with troubled teenagers. Satchel also works with couples and has treated a myriad of different issues including depression, anxiety, OCD, grief, Bipolar Spectrum Disorder, Dissociative Identity Disorder, and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Satchel provides counseling for both individuals and couples. Satchel also has a great deal of experience treating individuals that suffer from substance abuse disorders and process addictions.
Satchel’s approach to couples counseling is all about remaining neutral and objective. As an effective couple’s counselor, Satchel makes a conscious effort not to take one person’s side over the other. His approach to couples counseling is to fight for the relationship which is the thing that exists between the two individuals. Satchel’s goal with couples counseling is to identify and eliminate unhealthy patterns within the relationship. Satchel strives to help couples establish healthy boundaries and to develop better communication with one another.
Satchel’s approach to substance abuse counseling is one of compassion and empathy. In therapy, he will assist clients by removing the barriers of shame, guilt, and condemnation. The client will learn about their “recovery work” and what is required to maintain sobriety. Satchel is passionate about seeing clients set free from the bondage of addiction.
Satchel’s approach to adolescent therapy is all about earning the right to be heard. Adolescents are looking for an ally or a partner to empathize with them. They aren’t seeking another authority figure in their life but rather an objective sounding board that they can relate to and connect with. Satchel is uniquely gifted at earning trust by building rapport steadily over time. Satchel often involves parents in the therapeutic process because establishing unity in the home fosters a sense of peace.
Satchel’s approach to individual therapy is all about honesty and trust. When clients are fully honest during the therapy process, they seem to progress and recover quickly. Satchel believes that establishing an environment of safety and trust is a key ingredient for individual therapy. Satchel takes time to fully know and acknowledge the person sitting in front of him. He seeks to understand their personality and worldview in an effort to collaborate with the client in an effort to challenge unhealthy thought patterns and beliefs about self.
Satchel is married with four lovely children of his own. He strives to lead his life in a way that inspires others to do better. His approach to counseling has deepened and been enriched by the experience of seeing his own children grow and develop. His level of empathy for parents and the struggles that they face on a daily basis has also increased over the course of the last 10 years. Satchel understands that parenting can be both difficult and rewarding. His experience of being a dad and a loving husband allows him to speak life into difficult situations.
